My New Year’s Intentions for 2016

January 5, 2016

Photography by Zoë Grant

At the beginning of a new year, we often make a list of resolutions. These resolutions could be a various number of things; for ourselves or to help others. Maybe you want to eat healthier, or cook more homemade meals. Maybe it’s getting to the gym to work-out daily, or writing thank-you letters for gifts you receive or simply to keep in touch with your loved ones. Whatever goal is on your list, it’s something that we plan to accomplish that make us a better or happier person.

Let’s be real. How often do you find yourself actually completing your list? I honestly cannot remember a year I’ve ever stuck with it and actually finished one New Year’s Resolution, let alone an entire list of them. My pretty list of things tends to disappear from my mind and becomes a faint glimmer of hope, until suddenly the year has ended and nothing has been accomplished.

Definition of Intention

This year, I’ve decided to set several intentions that I intend to carry out throughout the year. Instead of working on them all at once, I have given myself an “Intention of the Month”. I’m hoping that it will give me adequate time to fully dedicate myself to accepting the change and sticking with it. I also hope that once the month of intention is completed, that it’s fully ingrained, and sticks with me.

So, BRING IT ON 2016, I’m ready for ya!

My New Year’s Intentions for 2016*:
Self Care

What about you, do you have resolutions you’ve made for 2016? Any tips or suggestions you have on sticking with the plan?

*I haven’t quite planned the entire year out, it seems as though I’m more of a fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pants-choose-an-intention-when-the-month-starts type of gal! So stay tuned.

A VB BASICS Giveaway {Win 100$ of Zutano} : CLOSED

November 18, 2015

Babies and Zutano bootiesI want to introduce you to a staple in my VB Basics “baby” wardrobe. Meet Zutano, a children’s clothing company located in the hills of my home state of Vermont. Their clothes are bold and bright, with versatile prints/patterns and are all made with the SOFTEST cotton. From preemie sizes all the way up to Toddler 4T, they have created clothing that is playful and fun yet very functional. The Zutano brand, its employees, and partners “firmly believe that we owe it to our children and our children’s children to inspire and engage the local and global community in a sustainable way that creates real and positive change”. They also have an acclaimed “Baby-to-Work” program that has been going on for a decade, in which their employees may bring their up to one year old babies to work with them. As a local Vermont business, Zutano certainly seems to be making an effort at home and worldwide to better our environment.

Let me tell you about why my family loves Zutano so much. Five years ago, I purchased a pair of their Cozie Baby Booties for our first child, and was instantly captivated by this great company. Jump forward to present day, and those same green fleece booties are in great condition, and are worn and well loved by my third baby boy. Zutano’s booties are my “go-to” baby gift, which I usually scoop up from Sprout Children’s Boutique, a local Virginia Beach business. The booties are toasty warm and actually STAY ON baby’s feet with the helpful snaps. I would like believe that every friend’s baby has a pair because of my recommendation – make sure you have the 6-12 month size, it’s the most practical size, I promise! (And how simply adorable is my oldest son with all his Virginia Beach baby buddies rocking their beloved booties in the photograph above? They were the runners up in a Zutano photo contest years ago).

As my boys have grown up, Zutano clothes in toddler sizes have filtered into their closets. The clothes are super comfortable for my active children, and the colors have never faded with all the use and MANY cycles in the washing machine! The boys LOVE the fun prints and I often have to dig through the laundry for the favorite Dino City print hoodie or search for the shorts with the “deep pockets” (quoting my 4 year old). Over the years we have come to adore their Spring, Summer and Fall lines, but as we move into the colder months here at the beach, their Cozie fleece is an absolute must-have to keep your kiddos warm. I’m especially digging their new collection of Warm Waffle Cozie, which I secretly wish they made in adult sizes…

Fall in the park

Bikes on VB Boardwalk

I must admit, Fall happens to be my favorite time of year to be active outside. What’s not to love? Cool temperatures, and mosquito free evenings. It’s truly the perfect time to take advantage of the low temperatures when you don’t feel like your entire body is about to melt into the pavement or sand.

Don’t forget to dress warmly. Layers under your coat, gloves, warm socks, hat, etc. Better to be prepared, than cold!

  • Take a hike out of the wind in First Landing State Park. Maybe it’s the Vermonter in me, but one of my favorite places to visit during Autumn is the Park. It’s almost as if I’m back in the Green Mountains with the beautiful changing foliage.
  • Cruise down the 3 miles and 27 feet of Virginia Beach’s Boardwalk on your beach cruiser. I bet you’ll run into at least one of your friends doing the exact same thing! Often, I like to go even further down past the Cavalier and zip onto Ocean Front Avenue. If you bike slowly, you can check out the beautiful houses that hug the sand.
  • Stroll down the miles of beach along the shoreline. There is a lot of beach to cover if you start in the 40s and head towards Fort Story! Breathe in the ocean breeze, watch the surfers and paddleboarders ride the waves and brave the cold. Dog owners, your beloved four-legged friends are allowed on the beach un-leashed until Spring.

What are your favorite out-of-doors activities to do in the Fall?
